Romig Presents Testimony Before Congress Related to Her Work with Brownfields

By

On April 21, 2016, Amy E. Romig will testify before the House of Representatives Committee on Energy and Commerce, Subcommittee on Environment and the Economy. The hearing, “EPA’s Brownfields Program: Empowering Cleanup and Encouraging Economic Redevelopment”, will include testimony from Mr. Meade Anderson (Brownfields Program Manager, Virginia Department of Environmental Quality, on behalf of Association of State and Territorial Solid Waste Management Officials), Mr. J. Christian Bollwage (Mayor, City of Elizabeth, New Jersey, on behalf of US Conference of Mayors and the City of Elizabeth, New Jersey), Ms. Veronica Eady (Vice President and Director, Conservation Law Foundation), Mr. Clark Henry (Owner, CIII Associates, LLC), and the Honorable Mathy Stanislaus (Assistant Administrator for the Office of Solid Waste and Emergency Response, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency), in addition to Ms. Romig.

Currently, the EPA’s Brownfields Program works to develop blighted properties, improve the communities in which these properties are located, and to make a property work again by providing tax revenues and jobs through redevelopment. Ms. Romig’s testimony supports expanding this resource to provide additional resources to small and distressed communities focused on improving the economic vitality and quality of life for their citizens. While contaminated properties will always present inherent risks to private businesses looking to develop them, Ms. Romig argues that the existence of the Brownfields program helps level the playing field and provides some seed money to overcome the risks of environmental contamination, further stating that without this funding, much of this development would never happen.
