September 7, 2011   Dr. Doug Tallamy Returns to Indianapolis to Lecture on Biodiversity
By Plews Shadley Racher & Braun LLP

Plews Shadley Racher & Braun is pleased to support the Indiana Native Plant and Wildflower Society (“INPAWS”), and to sponsor, a free lecture at Clowes Hall, featuring Dr. Doug Tallamy, a University of Delaware entomologist, wildlife ecologist, nationally-known speaker, and the author of “Bringing Nature Home:  How Native Plants Sustain Wildlife in Our Gardens.”  This year, Dr. Tallamy’s lecture is entitled “Networks for Life – Addressing the Biodiversity Crisis through Landscape Connectivity.”  Dr. Tallamy will “present a comprehensive strategy for connecting natural landscapes to improve the supporting food web for future generations.”  Dr. Tallamy will explain that:

biological diversity is essential to sustaining human societies, but throughout the U.S. we have fragmented the habitats that support biodiversity.  These isolated habitats cannot support healthy ecosystems, from which we receive a wide variety of necessary services. We can reconnect viable habitats by changing the landscaping paradigm that dominates our residential and municipal landscapes.  This strategy could create 20 million acres of connectivity in support of biodiversity.  But we must act now.

The lecture will be delivered on September 13 at Clowes Hall, on the campus of Butler University, in Indianapolis.  The doors will open at 6:30, with displays from those sponsoring the event, and the lecture and a period for questions and answers will begin at 7:30. A book signing will follow and refreshments will be served.  The lecture is hosted by INPAWS, Butler University’s Center for Urban Ecology, the Indianapolis Museum of Art and a number of other local environmental organizations.  As part of its support, PSRB will be devoting several of its regular underwriting spots on WFYI to the promotion of this lecture.
